Obituary

by Hoh Kim

1.

“Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” (Ps. 90: 12)

In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began, I embarked on a longcherished project: drafting my own will while I was still healthy in mind and body. Over three months, I consulted with a professional lawyer and created a detailed document. I then had it notarized with two witnesses and entrusted it to my wife and the law firm’s safekeeping. The document includes a draft of my obituary.

Just like checking the expiration date when buying or drinking milk, I start each day mindful of my own “expiration date.” In October 2023, I took a month-long road trip with my wife, covering over 2,800 kilometers in the Midwest of the United States. I couldn’t help but notice how my physical strength and energy levels had changed since my previous a month-long road trip in southern Spain ten years ago. It hit me that I didn’t have many more years left for long road trips.

The thought that my days of savoring my favorite whiskey and champagne are numbered makes me appreciate each sip even more. I realize that the time I have left to help others, work on projects, and earn a living is finite. The prospect of visiting my beloved city of Kyoto someday also feels more precious knowing that my opportunities to do so are limited.

When I spend four hours every month engaging in late-night conversations with my book club at Trevari, I’m acutely aware of the fleeting nature of these moments. I approach each day, each project, and each relationship with the understanding that this could be the last time. This awareness guides me towards making better decisions at every fork in the road.

That’s why I start each morning by playing the song of “Danny Boy.” It’s a signature song on my “SFMF” (Song For My Funeral) playlist, which I’ve specified in my will as my preferred alternative to a funeral. I wrote: “Instead of a funeral, I want my loved ones to remember me by listening to the music with Krug champagne, a drink that holds special meaning for me.”

2.

Maya: ‘Seriously, the ’61 Cheval Blanc is peaking… it might be too late already.

What are you waiting for?’

Miles: ‘I don’t know, a special occasion. With the right person.’

Maya: ‘The day you open a ’61 Cheval Blanc, that’s the special occasion.’

(Script from the movie, Sideways)

Every day, I ask a series of questions. The first one is, “Hoh, what do you want?” This question prompts me to examine my various desires, helping me to see anew those that I had been vaguely and passively accepting. Confronting this question led me to reconsider the long-held assumption that “longevity equals happiness.” I realized that what I truly desire is not to live a long life, but to live a healthy and enjoyable life until I reach my 70s. Living into my 80s is not part of my desired life scenario. That said, I do not contemplate suicide. Rather, I have a desire to accept death gracefully if I were to contract a serious illness in my 70s, without

pursuing aggressive treatment. For me, thinking about my death everyday serves as a driver that motivates me to live my life here and now to the fullest.

3.

“Don’t wait for one last look at the ocean, the sky, the stars, or a loved one. Go look now.” (Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and David Kessler, Life Lessons: Two Experts on Death

and Dying Teach Us About the Mysteries of Life and Living)

Through my art practice and exhibition, I am crafting my own personal dictionary. In my first solo exhibition (2023), I explored the concept of “adult” and the process of becoming a psychological adult. This second exhibition delves into the second entry in my dictionary: “Obituary.” As Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, the renowned psychiatrist and author who studied death, once said that the study of death is ultimately the study of life. An obituary, while announcing the death of an individual, is essentially

a reflection on their life. In preparing for this exhibition, I was led to contemplate my own final moments and how I would view my life from that perspective.

Just as a fine champagne is crafted by blending different grapes(‘assemblage’), a good life is a composition of diverse experiences and endeavors. Using various media and materials, I sought to express the remaining time of my life. This process was both a preparation and a ritual for me to live out that time to the fullest.
